A temporary pause on charging the federal sales tax on many items has retailers excited, even though they say preparing for the relief will mean a lot of extra work in a short period of time.
Ottawa's list of qualifying goods is lengthy and wide ranging as it includes diapers and kids clothes, but also items such as newspapers, plush dolls, English muffins and bottled water. Some businesses, especially small- and medium-sized ones, may not have the appropriate infrastructure in place to make the changes quickly, he said.
Dan Kelly, president of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, agreed such tasks can be "reasonably straightforward" for restaurants and food service businesses, but said it "may add confusion and complexity for general retailers." CFIB's Kelly has already heard from one retailer of children's products who fears missing so much of the busy shopping season will mean the cuts negatively affect sales.
