The SACC's visit will start with a briefing by SAPS to gain insights into the site at Stilfontein.

The South African Council of Churches General-Secretary, the Reverend Mzwandile Molo, is today expected to lead a visit to aEfforts to bring them to the surface are yet to yield positive results.Officials from the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force who are involved in the operation, have used a crane to lower a camera into the shaft to assess the risks and establish the number of illegal miners.

Some residents have put the number of illegal miners at about 4500, but the government has disputed this. The SACC is expected to meet with church leaders, community members, and affected families. The visit will start with a briefing by SAPS at the site to gain insights into the progress of the operation and offer pastoral support to affected families.

Meanwhile, no humanitarian aid has been given to the illegal miners underground this week, even though the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ordered last weekend that they be given food and water and the needed medication. The Health Department has, however, reiterated that no medication can be sent underground without a diagnosis.
