Mark Bristow says mining critical for a sustainable world

Mining needs more echo chambers, Rohitesh Dhawan, chief executive of the International Council on Mining and Metals , told delegates at a London mining conference today. Using David Bowie's Heroes as an example of how echo chambers work , Dhawan said that the industry needs to signal that it is a "welcoming and inclusive" space, pointing to the many advantages mining brings to host countries, not least the massive contribution to GDP.

"There's no shortage of metals in the ground," he said, then pointing to where the resources were in the world and where Barrick had gone to develop assets."If you search for elephants, you need to go to elephant country," he said. An unfortunate turn of phrase, given his propensity for big game hunting.
