A new weekend market dedicated to selling mainly chickens has opened on the Sunshine Coast in what is believed to be a first of its kind open to the general public. Selling a range of poultry from spectacular Gold Laced Wyandotte chickens to rare bantam call ducks, the market operates in a similar way to farmers' markets where buyers get to meet producers directly — in this case, heritage poultry breeders.

"There's this gap between people who exhibit poultry and people who are interested in backyard chickens who want to somehow access these fantastic breeds," Perma-Poultry Market founder, Kate Grealy said. "We're able to provide access to birds that otherwise aren't available from their local produce store."
