REUTERS: U.S. stocks rose in choppy trading on Thursday, as strong July retail sales data and Walmart's upbeat results eased some fears about the economy slipping into recession, but a slump in shares of network gear maker Cisco limited gains.
The Commerce Department said retail sales rose 0.7per cent in July, well above expectations of a 0.3per cent rise, as consumers bought a range of goods even as they cut back on motor vehicle purchases. At 9:53 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 58.86 points, or 0.23per cent, at 25,538.28 and the S&P 500 was up 7.86 points, or 0.28per cent, at 2,848.46. The Nasdaq Composite was up 10.42 points, or 0.13per cent, at 7,784.36.Channel NewsAsia - Sentifi topic widget
