Australia Post profits drop 70 per cent as letter business continues to struggle | domp

Australia Post's profit after tax has dived 70 per cent to levels not seen since 2016, a result the government-owned company blamed on a significant decline in its letter business.

"Without an increase to the Basic Postage Rate, Australia Post will no longer be able to afford to fully subsidise the losses from the important post business, which would risk the closure of community post offices and a reduction in services."Australia Post has asked the competition watchdog for an increase on the price of stamps by 10¢, though Ms Holgate warned that would not address the "totality" of losses the company is experiencing with its letters division.

Revenue for that segment was up $341 million on 2018, and reported a $103 million boost to profit, which Ms Holgate said was due to Australia Post's domination of the e-commerce market.to help meet Australia's growing demand for online shopping, of which Australia Post facilitates more than 82 per cent.
