What to buy at L.A. farmers markets this week:

, a professor of plant pathology at Cal Poly Pomona, planted lychee trees in his Covina orchard. “Such was the mystique that he cultivated, along with some of the state’s oldest, largest and rarest exotic Asian fruit trees, that he and his family always insisted that his home’s location remain unspecified to deter intrusions by overzealous fruit lovers,” wrote David Karp of Jerry Dimitman in his 2012 obituary.

“I don’t know the names of them,” Robert said about the gorgeous fruit — they have five kinds of lychees on the Covina ranch — although he thought Sunday’s batch might be the Brewster, or Chen Purple, a type named after the Chen family in Guangdong, China, known for their lychee farming. “Dad tagged them with a marker that’s smudged off. He never intended it for a cash crop; he was just growing them for his Cantonese friends.”Get as many lychees as you can eat in a day or so.

But can you boof them?

What a dream to have a lychee orchard. Maybe add loquats and kumquats.

AmyScattergood 👀

AmyScattergood Aloha Friends, its so hard to find these cheap here in Hawaii. Used to be people with these trees just gave them away free back in the day. Now people will rob entire trees of all these tasty fruits to sell off the backs of their trucks. What changed us world?🤔

AmyScattergood Lychee is what they call solid waste runoff or “garbage juice” at the northeast transfer station for solid waste disposal in my municipality. I’m not kidding. They call it that for a reason...

AmyScattergood OMG LYCHEES. Such a sleeper fruit. 'oddly sensual' lmao

These are great for parties when stuffed with cream cheese (after they've been peeled)......pat dry first so they don't slide out of your fingers across the room....

latimes Anyone know good farmers market near Burbank? I see studio city has every Sunday. Is that a good one?

latimes 😋 lychees

latimes Just don't give them to any malnourished children or they will be 'mind-blown' literally. Lychees are linked to numerous Encephalitis deaths among malnourished children in India.
