“More women having that experience translates into having that upward trajectory in their careers, which translates into more women leaders,” said Elissa Sangster, CEO of the Forté Foundation, a non-profit advocacy group. “An MBA is one of the most effective ways to get on the corporate leadership ladder.”

“It’s totally possible [to juggle motherhood and graduate studies], the administration was totally supportive,” Pense added. “But there is a lot of anxiety for women over whether there would be support.” At Montclair State University’s Feliciano School of Business in New Jersey, more than two-thirds of the class is composed of women and the class size has doubled to nearly 700 over the past five years, said Dean Greg Cant.

“Schools have a responsibility to train managers with cross-cultural competencies, including gender,” she added. “When we’re training managers on how to negotiate, you need female perspectives at the table.”
