Influential racing figures are bracing for the fallout from the horse slaughter scandal to impact on the remaining spring carnival and beyond - unless racing authorities can restore public trust

of thoroughbreds being mistreated and killed at a Queensland abattoir would make it difficult to convince young, would-be horse owners to enter the sport.“We are looking for the next generation of owners, and some of the news that's in the industry at the moment, I can't see how we can possibly attract new participants,’’ he said.

Although the plight of bookmakers is unlikely to garner public sympathy, betting turnover underpins the racing industry. Flemington-based trainer Mike Moroney questioned the failure of racing authorities to decisively act on a looming problem before now. Racing Australia, Racing Victoria, Racing NSW, the Victorian government and corporate bookmakers all support the establishment of a national register to track every horse bred for racing from the time it is foaled to when it dies. Under current regulations, racing authorities stop accounting for horses when they retire.

Federal Department of Agriculture vets are assisting a Queensland government investigation into Meramist, the Caboolture abattoir at the centre where staff were secretly filmed by animal rights activists inflicting cruelty on horses, including ex-racehorses, before they were slaughtered.program showed the sport needed to be smarter at tackling the problem.

There will be no fall out. They all knew it was happening but are teflon coated like the gun lobby in the US. They will do nothing because there is no farm that can take 1000's of horses no longer wanted. It will blow over with the running of the Melbourne Cup and be buried again

What surprise me is the public is surprised by this. Racing horse average career around 3 years. Horse average age 30. You think someone paying to keep them to they die of natural causes and they go to horsey heaven...

Was a disgrace 😳🤷‍♂️👎🏻

The industry is outdated. Who wants to see 1HP do 1 lap anyway? Would rather watch 1000HP do 58 laps of Albert Park 🏎 🏁

If ever there was a stupid, pointless “ sport”.

How is it that people are shocked by this as if it's something new? It's been going on for years. Nothing has been done about it because the industry is riddled in corruption and govts are too gutless to shut down a sport that makes them a lot of money.

On second thought I don’t believe that none of them knew this was going on - out of sight out of mind - you will never be forgiven for this cruelty..

Is Mark Latham paid to promote Horse Racing ?

time to end animal cruelty, and animal exportation.

Spare a thought for the poor bookies, the true victims of the thoroughbred slaughter scandal

What’s going on here, why are people so cruel to these beautiful animals the world has gone mad.

Cowards cruel to animals run horse racing, as they do with greyhound racing. They must be brought to account.

The only people who still care are compulsive gamblers

Yet to be felt!?!?!?!! Why are we still talking about $$$$ Never spent a dime in animal racing of any type and never will. If you are going to gamble then buy a power ball ticket, at least you go to sleep knowing pain and suffering is not part of the payout.

Boycott this awful excuse for “sport”

State government failure to regulate looks the real problem. Self regulation in every industry has failed us.

Why aren’t these influential racing figures coming out to express their outrage?

The public are now watching a lot more closely....you had better do a hell of a lot better...

Close down that shithole in Queensland for a start and prosecute the mongrels that enjoyed doing this cruelty. Then stop over breeding for greed. All they are is a money making machine and you race the guts out of them and then they’re discarded and disappear.

Let's hope so. Now the 'news features' are picking up re racing, all I can think of is what may happen to those animals after they are finished.

Gambling destroys families, horse racing is cruel, and the Melbourne Cup is a state sponsored fundraising farse to bring in tourism dollars. It's Victoria's shame.

Boycott racing. It’s overrated

100 plus years of unrelenting cruelty is not going to be eliminated anytime soon...and particularly not by those who have presided over the cruelty. As always, they pay lip service to the welfare of the horses but ultimately serve mammon. They can’t be trusted.

What trust. Using animals for human entertainment, it's just time

Animal abusers deserve to rot in jail.
