The ongoing coronavirus outbreak in China is playing havoc with automotive production and the worst may be yet to come

Production in China was already curtailed by the traditional 15-day Chinese New Year holiday period that started Jan. 25 and was scheduled to end Feb. 8. Once the coronavirus took hold, the holiday was extended by 10 days in order to minimize further spread when workers would return to their jobs. reports 425 deaths in China from the virus and one in the Philippines as of Tuesday.

“Imagine those numbers when everyone would be there working,” said Köse in a phone interview. “In China, people work, they live 24/7 in same compound, share rooms with 8 people, so there is no way to get away from it.”
