Music industry veteran Kevin Liles on how to create more diversity in the music industry

, who was the creator of a phrase that gained popularity years ago, “on fleek.” Kevin shared his take on this. “Our dances and our lingo, certain things you can’t put patents on…for us, it’s just a way of life…for somebody else, they take it and they package it and they make it a business…but there’s certain things that you can’t take away from an Oprah, from a Barack Obama, from a Tyler Perry, a John Lewis, an Elijah Cummings…those people who have done some miraculous things.

Unity may be what the music industry needs to foster more diversity. “Look at rap music and look at the things that were created in my lifetime. You’ve had B.E.T., Radio One, Def Jam, Motown…what if all these guys would have got together? They would be the new Univision,” Kevin explained. “We didn’t know how to build together because…we were always separated.

So, how do we get more diversity at the seat of the table? Well, if you ask Kevin, he’d rather build his own table than ask for a seat. “I always say, our fight is not with us…I do believe we’re prepared to run companies.
