Gaming business Federal Group says it will not have jobs for about 1,500 of its 1,930 Tasmanian workers because of restrictions on the operation of hotels and casinos introduced to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Federal Group, which owns Hobart's Wrest Point Casino, said the closure of its businesses will leave it with no option but to slash its permanent workforce.

Executive general manager Daniel Hanna said the staff would be"stood down", so they remain employed and can access leave until venues reopen. In addition to the casino, Federal Group owns high-end hotels such as Saffire Freycinet, MACq 01 Hotel and the Henry Jones Art Hotel.A final decision on job losses will be made later today.
