From beach bars along the French Riviera to campsites in the Dordogne, businesses in the battered tourism industry faced a race against time to bring staff out of furlough, reactivate supply chains and secure bookings. In Cannes, host in normal times of one of the world’s biggest film festivals, public workers disinfected the beach ahead of the anticipated crowds.
