Federal banking regulators eased restrictions on investments that large banks can make on Thursday, including the so-called "Volcker Rule," sending bank stocks surging.
Officials from the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission said on a call that they are loosening the restrictions from the Volcker Rule, allowing banks to more easily make large investments into venture capital and similar funds, and also allowing banks to avoid setting aside cash for derivatives trades between different affiliates of the same firm.
It was only a decade ago when millions of Americans paid the price for Wall Street gambling in lost jobs, homes, and life savings. Reopening the Wall Street casino is the wrong path forward, one that puts all Americans’ financial stability at greater risk.
People desperate for credit during the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, so let’s allow banks to push us closer to a total collapse of our entire nation? Yeah. Maybe not a good idea. The GOP is up to something and it’s not the success of our nation.
