rolling out Together mode for Teams this week, a video conferencing tool that attempts to bridge the gap between virtual and in-person meetings.Together mode offers an alternative to "grid view," in which video call participants are displayed on-screen — instead, through AI segmentation, participants are placed in a single virtual environment such as an auditorium or coffee bar, creating the illusion that they are in the same space.
Together mode can help address executives' concern that the shift to remote work has caused productivity to slip. According to a PwC conducted in June, 31% of US executives believed company productivity had decreased in the wake of lockdowns and shelter-in-place measures. Switching from in-person to video-based collaboration seems to be contributing to that drop in productivity: People have a harder time concentrating on virtual meetings compared with those conducted in-person, and attention falls precipitously around the 25-minute mark of a video call,
