I was attacked by a dog and spent almost 8 hours in the ER. For people still not taking COVID-19 seriously, please think about others who need access to emergency care. (by ShaylaRacquel)

Shayla Racquel is a 31-year old writer, director, and creative based in Washington, DC.

"Think about emergency victims who aren't suffering from COVID-19 but ... can't receive access to the emergency care they need. Please start thinking of others," she pleads of those not taking the pandemic seriously. Last week I was severely mauled by a dog. I have deep and long puncture wounds, a crushing injury, muscle injury, and my arm has to be repaired by a hand specialist. I want to talk about what it's like to sustain a major trauma injury in the midst of COVID-19.

I dropped my phone in the altercation so the owner dropped my phone in front of my apartment door and yelled, "Call the police!" Finally someone took my vitals ā€” my blood pressure was in the stroke zone. They wanted to admit me, but there were no beds. I sat and I waited. Everyone tried to laugh and crack jokes with me which helped ease things a bit, but still I was scared out of my mind.

She came back to open up my bandages and dress my wounds and was shocked when she saw how bad the damage really was.
