The world's airlines need another $70-$80bn of government aid to get through the pandemic, the industry says.

The world's airlines need another $70-$80bn of government support to get through the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Government travel restrictions and a huge fall in passenger confidence meant global demand for flights fell about 60% last year, according to IATA figures. He points out that greater choice benefits passengers, competition normally means lower fares . On top of that, before the pandemic, more than 65 million jobs depended on aviation.

The chief executive of Qatar Airways, Akbar Al-Baker, is hopeful this new technology can help increase passenger numbers. Both chief executives are frustrated by different governments having different requirements for travellers to enter their countries.

Let it fail and then they might actually realise profits are meaningless in times like these!

They need to plan better for these unfortunate situations.

They should be bonded if they are to secure government loans. They will be raking it in when the good times return and cannot expect free money!

This is where the share holders have to put the money back in.

Have they thought about a payday loan?

So do I .

Children in poverty need the money first. If the airline owners can’t bail them out from their own pockets then let them fail.

Wait till they try to force covid passports. That will be coup de grâce...

Let them fail! Then when this is over the planes can be bought by new company’s. We’re not bailing out independent businesses so why are we bailing out companies that have made ridiculous profits year on year.

Gr9

Maybe we should not want them...to survive. It's polluting, loud and in most cases totally unneccesary.

The airlines were unsustainable before the pandemic. Let them go bust. They were long overdue a reset.

Surely they have insurance to cover this?

grantshapps Ask Mr Grant Shapps for help - he's been so on the ball with everything travel and tourism...NOT!

NOT FROM TAX PAYERS!!!

The way I see it is, for years UK Airports have been ripping us, the unwashed punters off with over priced breakfasts, rip off parking, charging to drop off, scam fast lane security pass, charging for trolly use, lost bags. And you lot want sympathy!! Errr no!

Weren’t they making enough profits & bonuses off the public with bosses now living in mansions or private islands? Why should taxpayers money be used to bail them out? And then we have to suffer the burden of potential future rises in income tax.

Let them go down. It's time the world acts upon all these unsustainable business models, and rebalances itself in a much more organic, holistic way

Surely all the profits they made for years should keep them for a while ...........

Will maybe need more because how often have we been given hope to see it crash and burn will the vaccine work probably will it stop COVID maybe not do some research read what some respected doctors are saying and do your own research

Bail them out? How about Govt also ensuring local councils and utility companies freeze their increases this year. That would help all of us..

I've yet to see poor airline boss or owner .. need to take the rough with the smooth!

Sorry we've not got it, we gave 22billion to some chancer for a world beating track and trace that's vanished.

They could get knotted if I had my way. I've got no time for idiots

Don’t bail them out with our public money unless we take ownership.

Bet they wish they had built up cash reserves when the going was good. We cant keep bailing out businesses. The pandemic is a natural disaster and a risk that businesses take

Use some of their own money sell some of there islands yeh not our money to keep them in luxury

Thats world wide... NOT UK..MAKE IT CLEAR IN YOUR HEADLINE

Why? What’s the point?

or we rethink flying - to save the planet? FridaysForFuture StopFlying ReduceAirMiles stop cheap flights Ryanair

Let them go to the wall. Always another to take their place. Perhaps the greag stelios will make a comeback.

Me too.

$80 bill seems a bit toppy!! Can we have a breakdown of that please?

Government money bailout = Taxpayers money. Us minions get hammered when we can or have to fly & hammered when we can’t fly...win win for the 1%

tough🥱😷

So every single one of these companies will be backed by billionairs and hedge funds but the public has to bail them out ?

Why do they need to survive? They could have made hay when the sun shone but no they gave as much as they could to shareholders to ride a ride of rising share prices. Why should tax payers supplement them without a significant pay back in shares?

Let ‘em fail. Free market innnit.

Why, no one's flying. Why are taxpayers playing for grounded planes. Healthcare workers are overwhelmed, give the healthcare system 80 billion to keep it afloat. Stop giving airline executives payrises, they've gouged the public with huge fare increases for decades

Give Front Line workers travel vouchers for a well deserved break. Win/Win

Then its shareholders should bail them out

also airline ceo’s:

Who should get the 80 bn the airline industry or the nhs

I'm not flying until ppl stop acting like assholes. Thank you.

Get 22bn these fuckwits have spent on track n trace!!!

Yet you are showing the travel show now on bbc1, where’s e2 going like

Bloody self employed and small businesses need financial help. The airlines can go rot

When airlines are making billions of profit they don’t give up he government some so why should the government bail them out when they struggling?

No it doesn’t

RishiSunak BorisJohnson ExcludedUK and the 3 million self employed left behind by an incompetent government don’t need that much! We just need what us owed! Come on now enough is enough!

Let the market sort it our.

Same.

Let them fail. Airlines do nothing for society so amazing they deserve 80 billion. Let the billionaires hand them money, not taxpayers!

Is now a double winning for the Airline industry. So hard to belief that all the wealth they made charging arms, legs and all in-between was not saved for raining days.

Oh well.

It’s pathetic that all the bosses of these industries are on massive salaries and gloat in the good times but can’t manage their companies in bad times and instead show weakness and self pity and ask for handouts

Dropping sanctions, ensuring proper support for 'little people first' costs a billion. The Toryz will? What happens in the greenhouse stays in the greenhouse.

Great! Let’s fuel the climate change crisis 🙄

Make air travel a luxury again. Even on a short flight. Getting that tray with all the bits and pieces on, along with a hot foil meal was the No1 thing about flying. No Kelly or Liam are trying to flog sarnies for 10 quid a pop.

They should have saved some money from every paycheck for a rainy day and not rely on hand outs from the government.

Actually they need customers.

How about $80B towards green tech mass transit infrastructure and a push for airlines to get off fossil fuels.

Let airlines die for the sake of the climate

Public needs another $200bn just to eat.

They should have been responsible have saved more money. At least that’s what they tell poor people

So if they have calculated what the costs will be to survive the pandemic then it follows that they also know when the pandemic will end.

No. $2,000 checks now.

As long as Ryanair goes first I don't care

Wrong. Depends how long governments deem it fit to continue.

Space rockets. Big, union jack covered space rockets. GlobalBollocks BrexitReality

What Pandemic? The one the media pumped due to poor government?

Lemme check my wallet

All over the world, the same condition will persist so don't worry ,do it gradually

Psh that's like three bitcoin
