LNP Senator Susan McDonald say Google has taken the advertising market from legacy media sources for itself, arguing that newspaper, radio and broadcasting networks should be paid for their original news content.

“There’s already quite a bit of data that the market share of Google - that you’ve achieved through taking the dollars of small business - has been directly converted, primarily from newspaper and radio and other news outlets,” she said.

“How can you separate that it’s okay for you to take advertising dollars from small business and that it's somehow a completely different function to the new articles that need to be paid for by these news outlets?" In response, Google Managing Director Melanie Silva said the Australian advertising market had grown from $8.9 to $16 billion from 2002 to 2018, implying the growth in advertising accommodated the loss of revenue for legacy media sources.
