When four singers get up on the Federation Square stage on Friday evening to perform a modern opera about love and loss, it marks the birth of a new national opera company, with ambitious plans to bring new audiences to opera, and take opera to new places.
Founding artistic director Linda Thompson says they want their new name to reflect their growing scope and ambition as a national company.“We want to be representative of the artists that we put on our stages, and the audiences we hope to grow,” she says. But she says many people, especially around university age, consume a broad range of films, games and musical genres which make them “really open to trying new things”.
The four singers perform a cappella with simple percussion, with an enigmatic film playing on the video screen above them.
