One year later - How lockdown changed the music industry

One year later, and a devastated industry is still desperately trying to pick up the pieces as the war against the coronavirus wages on.In early March 2020, every cancellation would cause me to hold my breath. Ultra, SXSW, Coachella and dozens more, caught in the midst of uncertainty as they postponed or completely terminated shows.

Still, the cancellations continued to pour in, and the world could do nothing more than wait it out at that point.Aah, the wonders of technology. Before we knew it, our favourite stars were flooding us with virtual content. EvenFor a while, a sense of community was restored, maybe even strengthened. We now had access to celebrities like never before. Singers hopped onto Instagram Stories for private concerts, connecting with fans on a more intimate level.

The 26th annual Samas, SA's biggest night in music, was divided into five bite-sized shows spanned across five nights., Lesley Mofokeng, spokesperson for the Samas, said the 2020 show might be virtual but promised it would not"lose that spirit and excitement that the Samas have become known for". And that's precisely what happened. Not only with the Samas, but with international award shows as well.
