U.S. stocks flipped between small gains and losses at the start of Wednesday's session ahead of the release of the Federal Reserve's minutes in the afternoon. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.09% rose 0.1% to 4,076. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.09% gained 58 points, or 0.2%, to 33,488. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.02% slid 0.3% to 13,658.

Investors will look to parse an account of the Fed's two-day meeting on March 16-17, when policy makers raised their forecasts for U.S. economic growth and inflation, but emphasized that accommodative monetary policy would stay in place until 2023. Shares of Target TGT, -0.04% were virtually unchanged after the retailer announced a commitment to spend more than $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by the end of 2025.
