The riots have left a bitter taste for sugar mills in KwaZulu-Natal.

The South African Cane Growers' Association says to date, sugarcane valued at almost R85-million has been rejected.The sugarcane was too damaged by recent unrest to process. The industry fears the fallout of the unrest is a further blow after severe droughts, cheap imports and the sugar tax.
