The $2.1 billion deal to acquire and run Digicel Pacific will be largely funded by the Australian government, in a move widely seen as an attempt to counter China's influence in the region.

"Telstra's acquisition sends an important signal about the company's potential and about wider business confidence in the future of the Pacific region."with operations in Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu and Tahiti.

Telstra said it was initially approached by the Australian government to provide technical advice in relation to Digicel Pacific and subsequently considered acquiring the business with its financial and strategic risk management support. Stopping Digicel Pacific from ending up in the hands of a Chinese company has been seen almost as strategically important as stopping Huawei from getting a hold in Australia's 5G network.

That's especially since Digicel Pacific uses a 4,700km undersea cable from Sydney that was largely funded by the Australian government in 2018 in an effort to prevent PNG and the Solomon Islands from contracting Huawei for the project.

Capitalism is supposed to be about competition yet governments keep allow companies to become monopolies its disgusting

Ironically Telstra was Telecom owned and paid for by taxpayers then privatised so government could get some money to waste now we're paying top dollar for using it. And still government throwing money at it

all that money selling the infrastructure to NBN has to find a home

Telstra secures deal to buy largest telecommunications company in the Pacific with Canberra's MONEY would be a more accurate headline - 'support' inplies incidental impact, NOT 90% of the cost. 💰

standards going down prices going up

why do we need to waste money on the Pacific? Let China funds it n we just cut off all routing from Pacific
