Workers at an REI store in New York City have filed to form a union. If they are successful, the store would be the first of the outdoor recreation equipment company’s 168 locations and 15,000 employees to do so.

It’s unlikely that the company will simply allow the workers to unionize without an election, however. A union on one site seems not well placed to confront the company. As a minimum it should extend to all the company's facilities and preferably wider to encompass that entire business sector.
