The Star spoke to numerous business owners, in particular restaurateurs, who say the lockdown benefit still hasn’t hit their bank accounts.

Alan Liu, owner of downtown Thai restaurant Salad King, said it’s been a month since he applied for the latest round of the grant, and he hasn’t received it for either location.

The province has generally been slower than the feds to dole out money, Sinopoli said, and this grant is no exception. Sinopoli is behind on rent because of the shutdown, which cut short the busiest season of the year for restaurants. He’s optimistic about spring and summer, but said restaurants aren’t out of the woods yet: “Getting to patio season is the challenge.”

Many businesses that had previously received earlier rounds of the grant waited for an email from the ministry to confirm their eligibility, said Rilett, but it never came.
