The bill is expected to be modelled on an Australian law making tech companies such as Google pay for news content on their platforms.
Rodriguez has previously said the bill is a priority, and that it will help support Canada’s media industry and combat fake news circulating on the internet. The online news law will create a framework for professional media outlets to collectively negotiate compensation deals with online platforms.Rodriguez said in the last 15 years, about 450 Canadian news outlets have closed, with the vast chunk of advertising revenues going to big digital companies.
At a virtual conference in February, the minister said the bill being prepared would help preserve Canada’s independent media, which he said is “in crisis.”
Fake news is a problem of editorial standard, and reading comprehension. High school English needs to include logical fallacies.
….like as long as it is wokery it’s real news and the rest is fake, biased and must be removed and cancelled?
Another Liberal disaster in the making.
Why was this law made in the first place? Wouldn't places like Google just not use these outlets going forward and then these outlets would suffer even more?
So what can “Fake News” be construed as? Anything that does not fit the narrative of the leading party? This is a VERY dangerous precident that is being set.
“Law *that the heritage minister says* will combat fake news…”is news. “Law to combat fake news…” is opinion and should be marked as such. Printing government press releases is not journalism.
Does this mean CBC and Toronto Star will finally be held to account?
Law to help stop highly aware people from speaking freely so that stupid people won't be offended.
A law can't be stopped to help news industry to combat fake news and stop them being PC, woke, radical left liberal progressives bottom feeders, SJW's and DEI muffins always virtue signal rhetoric nonsense instead of the facts, proofs and evidence of news.
Maybe this should have been done before covid hit.
There is a very fine line between freedom of speech and fake news. Lets hope they get this right! They should work on educating people about fake news 1st and foremost
Finally RebelNewsOnline will get the recognition they deserve unlike CBCAlerts cp24 and CityNewsTO
So the Fake News wants to police Fake News?
Wow, Trump really broke everyone’s minds with the fake news business.
Clear violation of Charter rights of freedom of expression. This government has total disregard for Charter rights.
Does 'helping the news industry' mean giving out more bribes to the corporate press? Does 'combatting fake news' mean censorship?
Lets face it, the concern for postmedia here is that the cpc and oil industry will get called out for regular use of disinformation. They did it constantly through the pandemic.
Facte checkers are the new thought police, and we, the people, shall trump you all.
Rodriguez wants the Canadian news industry paid becuz “we need to protect and make sure that Canadians have access to professional, non-biased, neutral, non-partisan information.” HAHA whatta🤡
Fake news like this?
Fake news is not allowed! Only Trudeau 'liberal' propaganda is permitted.
Fake News in itself
Good maybe CBC will have some consequences for their long list of umm retractions.
Lmao. You need laws to not suck at your miserable job?
The only way to combat fake news would be to shutter CBC completely. Then remove a few Global and CTV reporters like Mercedes “The Globalist” Stephenson as well.
In other words, censorship is coming. So much for free speech being protected.
waste of money
You’re playing a dangerous game. Anything at all that this government puts forward to try and touch free speech, we will block with Section 6(1) of the Conflict of Interest Act.
Let us not forget that this news outlet contributes its own share of fake news.
This is like subsidizing the candle industry after the introduction of electricity. Money down the toilet.
