Historical photos of Pierre's Ice CreamCLEVELAND, Ohio — It was the late 1970s, and it was an exciting time to work for Atlantic Records in New York City. Shelley Roth, who would later become the CEO of Pierre’s Ice Cream, worked in the marketing department while great rock, soul and disco music rolled in and out of the label’s doors.
While Pierre’s is a recognizable name on grocery stores shelves with a prominent factory along Euclid Avenue, Ohio Processors is less so, since the company mainly sells to other businesses. It makes products like whip cream, French custard mix, soft serve ice cream mix and coffee creamers for others.
Sol came from a poor family that immigrated from eastern Europe, his daughter said. After serving in the Army during World War II, he took a job delivering for a local dairy. Pierre’s is one of a few regional ice cream brands left in the country. For several economic reasons, regional brands have been rolled up into larger companies through acquisitions, Roth said, and it’s been challenging for smaller brands to survive.
Roth said her dad merely opened the door. She said she’s excited that in modern times more people talk about how those doors aren’t open for everyone, and about ways to open them.Long before Intel’s Ohio announcement, Lorain County Community College started teaching computer chip manufacturing
