The results of the UK's multi-year inquiry into loot boxes are in. The conclusion? Look more and find a different conclusion later.

The UK Government has issued a formal response to its 2020 call for evidence on loot boxes in videogames. In short: The UK's Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport doesn't think the government should regulate loot boxes in videogames at this time, rather that the games industry should be encouraged to self-regulate in order to avoid the necessity of legislative action.

"Our view is that it would be premature to take legislative action without first pursuing enhanced industry-led measures to deliver protections for children and young people and all players," said DCMS Secretary of State, the Rt. Hon. Nadine Dorries, MP, in her foreword to the report. The primary reason for this decision seems to be twofold, according to the report. First, the industry has already taken steps towards mitigating harm in recent years. Second, concern that regulation may cause developers to simply drop out of the UK market rather than comply as it has in other countries

So the UK is useless, how is this news exactly?

I E as long as they can bank on unethical gambling practices they'll continue to turn a blind eye.

Can’t people just not buy the games or if they do, not buy the loot boxes? Why does this need regulating?

The government have a 65 year old lady dealing with this, someone old enough to be most gamers nan or great nan.... Just let's think if they even truly understand what a loot box is.. or if they've ever even opened one... NOPE! Doubt it! Abysmal Government ruining lives.

What a joke

Yes self regulation we should expect the same amount of restraint when it comes to lootboxes and microtransations as to a fox in a chicken coop.

if you have to pay real money for a random digital item that can also be sold for money (even if it's credit that's only usable on your account) should be considered gambling.

So... if anyone didn't realize it around Brexit... UK government is a joke 🤡

If the future debate comes back with banning loot boxes as a result, then they better be banning casinos as well. Should probably ban national lotteries, too. If loot boxes are a form of gambling and should be banned, then all forms of gambling should be banned.

What the actual hell. So basically: 'We know you have a profit motive to strip mine your users so we want you to regulate your self in your continuing of using social engineering to steal from weak willed gamers.'

The conclusion? Some MPs have had their palms greased.

We investigated ourselves and concluded that loot boxes is totally not a form of gambling

Translation: We hear you parents, but money

Found you someone who loves doing nothing as much of literally any governing body.
