Waste company fined more than $500,000 after employee killed by reversing skip loader | sarah_keoghan

Waste management company Aussie Skips has been fined more than half a million dollars after an employee was struck and killed by a reversing skip loader in Sydney’s inner west.

At one stage, Singarajah walked behind the loader next to another colleague, who noticed the vehicle was suddenly reversing and jogged out of the way. He could not be revived by paramedics and the cause of death was ruled “a blunt force traumatic injury of the pelvis”.A review into the incident found the skip loader was new and had a reverse camera fitted, but it was not yet functional.Judge David Russell handed down significant fines to both the company and chief executive Emmanuel Roussakis, who was also the site manager on the day of the incident.

The judge said there was “no explanation” as to why there were no precautions in place to avoid collisions between workers and heavy machinery and that a “general rule” across the workplace to watch out for machines was inadequate.“The CCTV shows that Mr Singarajah saw the front-end loader reversing towards him and he tried to get out of its way. There was only six seconds between the loader starting to reverse and it running over the victim.
