Growing up in the rural village of Ga-Mphahlele, outside Polokwane in Limpopo, Charlotte Moloi always knew she would be among the women who would change the face of the mining industry

“I fell in love with mining after attending a career expo when I was still in high school. That’s when I was convinced that mining was the only career suitable for me. Also, having enjoyed physical science and mathematics, I saw mining as a perfect fit. At the time, I wanted to break the stereotypes that mining was not for women and to also be the first person in my family to venture in a different route,” she said.

The qualification allows different positions within the mining sector, including blasting engineer; environmental, safety and health manager; mine manager; mine design engineer; mineral resources manager; project manager; and rock engineer. As a mine manager, Moloi is responsible for the overall management of operations.

“As with any industry and work, differences in opinions will always be there and when conflict arises with male counterparts, I do not view that as being undermined. Emotional intelligence affords people with the opportunity for viewing and approaching a conflict situation with honesty and humility.”“Being in the position of a mine manager makes me responsible for ensuring that the operation which I lead is effective and efficient in terms of safety, costs and achieving planned budgets.
