A prototype based on the company's controlled release drug delivery product is expected within 18 months.

Celanese representatives did not return multiple calls and emails fromDr. Aaron Lazorwitz, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, said he isn’t aware of any previous work on refillable contraceptive implants.

Current contraceptive implants work by slowly releasing a progestin hormone into the body, but they have to be removed after use, he said. Inserting and removing the implants requires a medical procedure.
