UCalgary welcomes record number of students to on-campus housing amid COVID rebound, tight rental market yyc

Just more than 3,000 students will live on campus this academic year, with each of its 10 residence buildings filled to capacity and wait lists in place for students still looking for accommodations as classes resume next week. “Rental rates have gone up fairly significantly in the past year, and vacancies are quite low in the city, so we’re seeing many people coming to us looking for housing alternatives.”The average monthly cost of a one-bedroom rental unit in Calgary was $1,583 in July 2022, according to a recent Rentals.ca report. That’s a 27.1 per cent year-over-year increase; average rent across Canada increased by 10.7 per cent during the same time.

For Gurman Singh, another third-year student, living on campus will be a new experience. She started school during the COVID-19 pandemic and spent the past two years largely learning virtually.Students, with the help of family and student volunteers, move in to residence buildings at the University of Calgary on move-in day, Sunday, August 28, 2022.Sunday’s move-in marked the end of a long journey for Ryan Kulbacki, whose family drove 14 hours from Winnipeg to drop him off on campus.

Royal said students who still haven’t secured housing can access short-term emergency housing at a Banff Trail hotel, with the university covering that cost while they find a place to stay. To date, no one has yet needed to use that service.
