Three unions representing more than 15,000 workers have reached a tentative agreement with the major railroads — a big step toward preventing a possible work stoppage that would drastically disrupt the U.S. economy.
While the announcement of tentative agreements on Monday represents a step forward in the railroad labor negotiations, the carrier still needs to reach deals with nine other unions, including the two biggest ones representing engineers and conductors.
The National Carriers’ Conference Committee of the National Railway Labor Conference represents all Class I railroads in the negotiations, including Jacksonville-based CSX Corp., national president of the TCU, described the tentative agreement as a victory for freight workers, who have not seen a raise in three years. He also said the union would still be negotiating if he thought it could get a better deal.
