A return-to-office showdown is unfolding in Canada and pitting some bosses and workers against each other as the back-to-school season brings with it a renewed push to get employees back into office buildings.

It's a battle experts say could end a years-long experiment in flexible, remote work - or spark a sweeping worker revolt.

The head of Royal Bank of Canada recently said organizations need to find the right balance between remote and on-site working. “People want to hold on to the autonomy and flexibility that they've gained around their work schedules during the pandemic,” said Zweig. But other companies are rolling out new guidelines for returning to the office this fall, a situation that could lead to a standoff between managers and workers, some observers say.

Corps have been saving a lot of money on office space by not having their workforce on location. You know how we always say they only care about money and profits? Perhaps bringing people back to the office increases productivity and increases profits.

I worked the whole pandemic

Lol, WFH = go to the beach, go shopping, etc .... all while pretending to 'work'.... its hilarious that its lasted 30 months already. Will be hard for entitled bankers to threaten to quit when the other banks are imposing the same 'back to work' policies

This will be interesting as layoffs are imminent in the upcoming recession and those who revolt will be the first to go. The banks have hundreds of applicants waiting for each job opening. A good time to reset expensive employees

If you can wfh then wfh if your job requires a physical space or customer interaction then go in but get paid a extra % for going in. Companies reduce office space to save on lease costs. Gov then converts some of those office towers into condos to combat housing shortage.

Really we have people leaving because other companies are offering remote work 🤷🏻‍♀️

Amazing that people working in grocery stores haven’t dropped dead in the last 2.5 years but the people that work with the same 30 people everyday think they will.

Ironically they chose this decision after labour day ...

Productivity has gone to shit in Toronto. Everyone who’s reluctant to go back is either corporate or public sector. You’re way too comfortable in your line work if these are the decisions you’re worried about. If your a business owner (brick & mortar), all the power to you.

Funny. A company can help the economy and environment by having employees work from home it will also save companies $$$ on office space needed

Those people need to get their lazy ass back to the office.

Confirmation these large corps that flex about climate change are full of it. Nothing but virtue signaling

It should not enforced, if employees are productive WFH, then let them stay.

It's simple - either let your employees continue working remotely, or lose them to companies who will. People will figure out pretty quickly who the problem companies are. I hope people stop supporting inflexible companies.

Power to the people. Corporations coining it quiet quitting tells you what you're worth.

Good finally

Our office has been back since May 1, 2020. Not on government payroll.

Get back to the norm of working. Get off your asses and get to work or go do something else sitting on your ass. We've enabled wussies.

MPs working remotely sets good example

So will the ETR407 office finally reopen?

Ok. Prepare to loose talent when that happens.

Why tele working works great ... enough with the insecure bosses that need to see our smile .... less traffic...better for the env ... no time wasted commuting and quality of life ... break the leases and make affordable housing .. 🙄😷🙃

Good get back to reality like everyone else who hasn't stopped working in the real world !!

quickest way to lose talent; having to go to an office when you don't have to is continual psychic damage. are these companies even going to compensate workers for travel, preparation and food costs? getting to work costs time and money

Downtown Toronto small businesses and economy relies on people working in person. John Tory has personally asked downtown employers to order employees back. Banks starting to do so, including RBC and BNS. Big banks in NY now ordering employees back. About time we did the same.

Companies need to accept the fact that hybrid work is here to stay. Going back to 5-day in-office work is a losing battle.

the only people against remote work are middle managers who manage people who don't need to be managed. they do nothing but bog down productivity. they need people in the office to justify their existence.

So the banks are all about ESG. But they are mandating employees back to the office. IT’s a bit hypocritical, as thous of cars are added to the daily commute. Will their ESG scores be affected. I think not. Turdo is all about climate change, but agrees with the banks. Puppets.

surely any company mandating a return to office will pay for the inevitable sick days to come and fully compensate for long-term health issues that may arise bc of their policy....right ? right

Accuse the workforce of “silently quitting” as a way to “silently fire”. Then never admit you lost your talent & have to replace at higher wages for lower performance. Meanwhile the cream of the crop will move to employers who permit remote work cause those employers get it.

Going back to the office is great. Less work done when in the office. Multiple coffee breaks, lunch with coworkers that last more than an hour. Meetings where people just chit chats for 50 minutes and spend 10 minutes talk about work. The best part, getting paid to socialize!!!!

And they will just leave the firm for another company that offers remote working. Once they lose a good bunch of employees, they will adjust their policy. Seen this episode so many times over the past 2 years
