The Finance Minister says the government will need to include 'difficult' savings measures in its October budget, as cost of living pressures prompt one senator to call for the Reserve Bank boss to go.

abc.net.au/news/finance-minister-warns-difficult-budget-savings-coming/101412750The Finance Minister is warning savings will have to be made in the budget to pay for measures that are becoming more expensive, including aged care, defence and the NDIS.

But Senator Gallagher warned the government could not "pretend there is a magic wand we can wave and these pressures will be relieved overnight". Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government would today introduce legislation to lower the cost of medications listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, one of Labor's election commitments.

"They're going up through the roof now. This is going to send some households to the wall and there has to be some accountability in the system."Senator McKim also called on the government to introduce serious cost of living measures, instead of "playing around the edges", including a two-year rent freeze, and a temporary pause on further interest rate hikes, as more are expected."The Reserve Bank failed. There is no doubt about that," he said.

delegislating stage 3 tax cuts is the most simple answer to this - Labor wont do it because there are important business people who will create fake market anomalies like the recent energy rorts if they do

Stop the RBA raising rates and instead raise taxes.

Then perhaps they should cancel the tax cuts for high income earners?

Ofcourse ndis is such a holy cow. We have to tax middle class more so we can afford 38b spend on 500k participants. I can’t even do numbers to calculate per capita spend. I bet the ndis participants are the next millionaire factory loaded with money. It’s a taboo to question that

CatPurry9 Brain check ... Stop the money for GG

What credibility has the lady got ? Never ever forget her role in the mean girls ?

They should be paying for agedcare but that does not mean that they give millions to multinationals indirectly to agedcare via privatisation but rather pay nurses, carers, etc for real support not profit abcnews

Yay more inflation 😂

What bunk, banks recklessly approved home loans on basis no change to interest rates during rising house prices ?

If they'd stop subsiding the gas and mining industries we would have plenty of money !!! So, the question is, are you Labor, or Liberal lite ?Time to make up your minds !!!

Yeah, no… That’s not really how the monetary system or the Federal Government’s fiscal capacity works… Still, they should can the stage 3 tax cuts anyway.

So...like a budget?

NotAHousehold . Your govt is the issuer of the currency, Katie. Your ‘pie’/spending allocation is limited, ultimately, by inflation. That’s *actual inflation, not unfounded fear of inflation.

What about health and education. They are breaking down

It's the total Hypocrisy of All Politicians that ignore Pensioners who have paid their Taxes for decades only to have Politicians squander Public Money on themselves constantly.

Labor is still sucking the Murdochs off.

And with the damage those vaxes are doing the expenses for aged care and disability care will sky roclet.

Start by booting dole bludgers off welfare.

Hoorah! So long as any cuts come from the resource sector / top-end of town and have no trickle down impacts on the broader community

This is SenKatyG code for aged care costs are going to be ramped up.

Does the gov pay for aged care, defence and disability spending or does it uphold the legislation on tax cuts it does not believe in

SenKatyG there is 240 billion being gifted to politicans & high income tax cuts. OBSCENE In a cost of living crisis for most families. Essential services starved of funds from 9 years of LNP Govt yet AlboMP & JEChalmers choose high income tax cuts over services. smh auspol

And General Practice Doctor's without whom health care stops. medicare is Under funded by at least $50 per visit in inflation adjusted amount.

Lots of money to be saved on defence, if you don't pick fights with other Countries.

I take it these savings will NOT be coming from the wealthy?

So disappointing that Labor are in lockstep with LNP on this neoliberal crap about budget repair. We need to demolish this myth.

ha ha ha Government acting as a 'government' and an 'opposition' at the same time. Where are those lazy fellas from the other side? Ps opposition shld be questioning government policies hard - that is what we are paying you for - else I want my money (tax dollars) back.

Developing policies on the run obviously

Did the Government need reminding of that?

This neoliberal rubbish will kill people.

🤣😆 --- Of course, but will conveniently ignore the whole tax-cat fiasco... Me: 'John Citizen reporting, ma'am! *salutes* take MY money to pay for it all! --- If you can help me find it, apparently I don't have much' 🤣

Love how defence is snuck in there with aged care and disability support, like being America's lapdog is equal billing with supporting our most vulnerable citizens.
