Ottawa’s emissions targets for fertilizer use unrealistic, industry report argues

‘It’s shocking’: Sask. farmers react to federal government’s proposed cutdown on fertilizer emissionsStill, farmers have warned the goal is too ambitious, especially at a time when Canada’s agriculture industry is being asked to produce more to help address global food security fears.

Karen Proud, president and chief executive of Fertilizer Canada, said there are already a number of industry-accepted best practices in place when it comes to fertilizer management. These include using the right fertilizer for the soil, as well as applying it at the right time of year and in the right amounts.

Proud said that going beyond a 14 per cent reduction by 2030 would be economically unviable, since many of the changes required – such as working with a certified crop advisor, or doing soil testing – are costly for the farmer.“We need to be able to allow farmers to increase their productivity to offset the costs of implementing these best practices,” she said. “The only way to do that is you allow them to increase yields, or the math doesn’t work.

Unrealistic if you're trying to feed people. When everyone realizes they're trying to kill us all. Google - Gates' Ted talk about 'getting one of these numbers pretty close to zero' Spoiler alert. The 'number' they were laughing talking about 'getting to zero'. Was 'YOU & ME'.

This sort of report is like the O&G industry producing a report on fossil fuel impact on climate change

AmandaMsteph An industry-led report has to be questioned since they are only in business to produce fertilizer for profit.

Doesn't take much intelligence to realize how true this report is.

Feel good policy as usual. Sounds like every other target Ottawa ever sets……

Canadian farmers rock!

Just wait till the Liberals or NDP start freezing your bank account for using too much after declaring a long term 'Climate Emergency'.

And useless

Another bad plan, by a bad PM.

Global news trying to save there ass

Who would have thought that the actual farmers know how to farm better than idiot ideological politicians.

They already meet the targets.

The headline should be… “Ottawa is unrealistic.”

Something bad = 'Ottawa' Something good = 'Trudeau' Media playbook example 123,456

In the article: 'The government has said its 30 per cent target is a goal, not a mandatory enforceable target. It has also said it believes the target is achievable, since many of the required technologies and practices to reduce emissions from fertilizer use already exist.'

The farmers would have told you. All you had to do was ask.
