Genetic testing/services company Genome Medical lays off 11% of workforce, co-founder shifts from CEO to advisor role

Now the company, which had about 210 employees before the cuts, will focus on its core genetic services and counseling business as well as tech services that allow partners to better identify patients who could benefit from genetic testing and care, Alderson said. It is expanding its teams of medical geneticists and genetic counselors, Alderson added.

At the same time, Genome Medical is delaying a"third phase" of growth involving the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to translate its wealth of data into better insights for labs, health care systems and payers about patient care. "We've done a lot to lay the foundation for that," she said,"but ultimately, to really glean the promise requires further investment to get to scale."

Davies was a co-founder and CEO of GeneMatters and was chief customer officer at Genome Medical after the acquisition.
