'This time it's for real'

The controversial move of Northampton market traders to another location whilst the market square undergoes a major face-lift will "absolutely" happen in the new year, says the Leader of West Northamptonshire Council . The relocation of market traders has been delayed twice this year.

However, in July, WNC announced it had decided to delay the beginning of works until after Christmas and the New Year. In its statement, the council said it would give traders "some stability at one of their busiest times of year." The decision to relocate the market during works has proved highly controversial for many, especially some traders. Eamonn 'Fitzy' Fitzpatrick, 72, owns a fruit and vegetable stall and is well known as the leader of the 'Save the Market' campaign since the council announced its intentions to regenerate the square.

The support WNC has planned includes a social media campaign to grow the market's popularity before the move and sign posts directing the public to the new site following the relocation. Traders will also not be charged rent during their stay in Commercial Street.
