According to a Supreme Court of B.C. judgment, Robert and Maria Goff accused painting contractor David Moerman Painting and five employees, a paint provider, and two property caretakers of negligence that resulted in a 2016 fire that destroyed the lodge in a remote area of Jervis Inlet near Malibu Point. The crew started work on May 16. That night the lodge burnt to its foundation, with the intensity of the blaze forcing all people on site to evacuate by boat to a nearby camp.
