The Unicorn Within is perhaps the most comprehensive step-by-step guide to how to launch a startup. I have read many good books on entrepreneurship. Because each startup is different, many of the best stay at a fairly high conceptual level teaching the important concepts and sometimes diving a little deeper to teach a specific tool or technique. A few are excellent detailed primers on specific aspects of launching a startup .
I’ve spent about half my career in big, mature companies. The other half I’ve spent working in and with startups. They are worlds apart. At times I’ve tried to launch new ventures within big companies. At other times I’ve been on one side or the other of a startup trying to work with a large corporation. Everything about those two worlds is different. They are like oil and water. Big companies are often best served by moving slowly and avoiding risks. Startups must move fast and embrace risk.
I think The Unicorn Within strikes me as so helpful because it is simply capturing what Mach49 has done so effectively for many clients around the world. At times the book feels like an internal training manual for Mach49 employees to make sure everyone is following the same process with all clients. At other times it has aspects of a sales pitch — providing high level CVs of Mach49 principals who work on client projects or explaining how the firm adds value to client engagements.
