The illegal drugs industry is probably one of the 'largest employers' in the north Dublin area, the Dáil has been told

The Dáil debate follows an RTÉ documentary last month about O’Connell street in Dublin showing open drug dealing, violence, drunkenness and other anti-social behaviour and calls for the Taoiseach to lead a task force to rejuvenate the capital’s main street and surrounding area.

While the Garda station is being established “a high-visibility Garda command vehicle has been placed on O’Connell Street and has been manned”. Mr Gannon said “I want more police on the street but I want quality policing. We have great gardaí but I want a community-based policing approach on O’Connell Street. I do not doubt that we need them there but we need gardaí who can link in” with local community services. “We need more of that. That will enhance the city.”

Politicians are too busy with EU matters to be bothered about this sort of thing ! They’ve ignored it for decades !

Firstly that's hugely insulting to anyone living there and secondly if it is such a serious issue it's due to disinterest on behalf of government and a complete lack of garda on foot patrolling. It's not a complex to solve

The dogs in the street know who runs the areas and for years nothing ever happens to them as far as law enforcement goes....Rats.

This shows how bad the govt have run the country into the ground

Another reason the student cash bonus should have been issued after Xmas.

About time to legalize. We don’thave to swim against currant till we totally drown.

We're being invaded & all the snowflakes can do is shout racist at all the brave men & women that call it out! Soon you will all cry to be saved!

Decide who is in charge or it will be decided for us.

I find this offensive , the southside is a far better employer 🤣

People calling for Gov to legalise and control it ...imagine the f**kup they would make of that

IrishLitTimes The World not just Dublin

Sinn Fein/PIRA tried to take control of the Drugs Trade in Dublin in 2016...

Maybe that's why it should be legalised, and controlled by health care providers, not gangs.

Legalise it then, you would put the drug gangs out of business, addicts would not need to break into homes and steal from people including their own families, the crime rate would go through the floor overnight, open treatment centres where they can get their drugs & help.

Hard to solve a problem when one the most obvious solutions (legalisation of weed - wouldn't fix all the issues but would be a hell of a dent to criminal activity) is being willfully ignored.

Corporate tax breaks for drug Barron's so

Street dealing is really just the tip of the iceberg, the majority of drugs are now sold online via snap chat, etc. The only true workable solution to this problem is to legalise, regulate & tax all drugs, ring fencing the tax revenue for drug education and treatment of addiction

Ya I suppose when you think about it

Bigger than dublin airport?!🤔

How many of your staff are on the Bolivian cream, one would wonder. Its everywhere.

He does realise that the Dáil is on the South side not the North so it must be a big employer on the South side too

FrankFeighan thanks frankie! How is it when you're in the headlines, it's for all the wrong reasons? The only 'positive' headlines you generate have to come from Heather's dept. Constantly. Over and over again. Do something Frank! CannabisReformIreland

Leo will be happy with that

The selling of unregulated banned drugs is extremely lucrative and attractive for people to take advantage of not to mention inherently risking to people who use them. The only way of stopping it is through the state regulation and control of all drugs.

The whole of the city centre is a disgrace and a wash with drug dealing!

O'Connell St., North Earl St. and Talbot Street are a sad reflection of this. It's a national disgrace. Badly needs a clean up. Maybe with the launch of the new Cleary's quarter this will happen. Would not be tolerated in any other modern capital.

Legalise and Tax.

Sure cannabis and coke are the only inflation proof products atm

plenty of people on the payroll from the cops to the corner spotters...

Gombeenhunter Them deliveroo lads are delivering more than food.

A proportion of the money paid out by the Dsp goes straight into the hands of the drug dealers.

look at those drug couriers on their bikes any yokes lads ?

cardagh aosnodaigh gardainfo Pearse Park in Crumlin in dublin 12 have anti social issues involving illegal activites

It's keeping brown Thomas afloat. All buying the Gucci tracksuits, Canada goose jackets and Chanel handbags

All that tax money going to waste considering the majority of it being sold is just green.

And the Dept of Social Welfare the biggest funder.

FineGael law and order under HMcEntee

There's a solution which would fight crime, reduce harm and benefit the economy but Irish politicians are too timid and too much in thrall to Diageoireland. Why not legalise and regulate the drugs trade, take it away from gangsters, turn a massive cost into new tax revenue?
