CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Restaurateurs Karen Small and Jill Davis are opening Pearl Street Wine Market & Café, Friday, Nov. 18. The market opens at noon and the café starts serving at 3 p.m. We visited on opening day-minus-one to see what shoppers and diners can expect.Market Avenue in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. She also runs Juneberry Table on Lorain Avenue. Davis operates Toast in the city’s Gordon Square Arts District.
And the designer custom-made the large chandelier toward the back of the cafe. Shhhhh ... the sassy fixture is made from plywood.Chef Small has always had a farm-to-table approach with her food whenever possible. Now, she and Davis are taking a similar approach to wine. Pearl Street Wine Market has, arguably, Northeast Ohio’s largest selection of globally sourced, low-intervention wines lining shelves.
Pearl Street Wine Market & Cafe's Cruvinet wine preservation and dispensing system keeps open bottles fresh. “We want the food to support the wine,” says Small. A large number of wine selections in the café and market telegraph the “wine-forward” message. The cafe has six wines available by the glass and 12 available for glass or tasting. Glass prices range from $8 for two different French, red blends to $30 for a lesser-known Spanish white made from an ancient grape varietal.
If the hand-written merchandising tags hanging from many wine bottles don’t explain it well enough, Small can talk to the contents of many bottles. For example, wines distributed by Mary Taylor come from small, practically unknown farms. One selection is a Bordeaux rouge with a very simple label. The distributor believes in keeping bottle labels simple and letting what’s in the bottle do the selling.
