Premier Smith's proposed sovereignty act could drive investment away from Alberta: Calgary chamber yyc yycbiz ableg abpoli

Alberta Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani delivers Throne Speech focused on affordability, health-care reform, jobs, and fighting Ottawa

Yedlin argued the act does not allow for constructive conversations with the federal government and that all levels of government need to collaborate to make Alberta an attractive place to invest and to work, stating the province has to compete with jurisdictions from all corners of the globe.Article content

Yedlin said Quebec lost tons of investment when that province grappled with the idea of separation. She said that while Smith’s bill makes it clear it is not about separating, just the idea of uncertainty will cause investors to look elsewhere.Lisa Baiton, president and CEO of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, said they are taking time to review the bill with their members. She said they are concerned about any policy that has the potential to create uncertainty for investors.

Meanwhile, several groups that could fall under the ‘public entity’ definition of the act and could be subject to ministerial directives said they need to read the bill further before providing comment.

The Liberals and NDP have created this economic disaster we are in. Let us point the finger in the right direction.

Bullshit

It could bring it raining in as well. You have no clue only an agenda to defend. Please start your commentary with how much media bribe money you have taken so we can gauge the entertainment of your news. Were is your WEF pin?

Another news outlet that has bias views . They call it news 🤣🤣🤣

All kinds of things “could happen”. On the other hand, investment might just come back to Alberta. I’ve seen way too many “expert” opinions in the last couple of years that have been dead wrong in their predictions to take many seriously anymore.

The Federal government is doing that already though.

Calgary Herald equals another liberal rag. Nobody cares. Legacy media is dying.

Scaremongering. No company will leave Calgary solely because of this Act. Try again

I have a sneaky suspicion the US empire and its oil companies are watching this unfold with glee. Their investment of undermining Canada is about to pay off y’all.

We need a Alberta separation Forget autonomy forget sovereignty separation

Could? Or attract more investment!! Quebec is fairing well economically.

Another propaganda campaign trying to make people believe this is true

It won’t!!! I’ll bet on that! It is the Canadian Federal Government that has driven investment out of Alberta … Canada as a whole. Other countries have very low confidence in our Ministers! cdnpoli

Let me be clear, THE NDP WILL DEFINITELY enforce any Federal law or policy that violates the jurisdictional rights of Alberta under Sections 92 – 95 of the Constitution or that breaches the Charter Rights of Albertans.

No, it is the precise opposite. I've had many telephone calls and emails since Bill-1 was announced. All positive.

It can also drive up the economy when people decide to move there.

She definitely has my vote.

WRONG. READ ATTACHMENT

They'll be coming here by the droves give your head a shake away from Ottawa.

It is just one of a thousand things that will keep people out of Alberta. Who in their right mind would want to invest in a province with a government that does not have a clue?

Lol

Fake news

No NDP lies by people who refuse to read the bill may drive away business. If supporting the constitution and bill of rights drives you away, we need to question you.

Actually it won’t IT will bring it in because we’re the province willing to tell Jihadi Justin to go fuck off

Harp harp harp

Why would it scare off investment?

No, the NDP AND LIBERALS drive investment away and you know that. They also created a job loss of 159,000 jobs in 6 months. I did read that in your paper. Now you change your story so, How much did Trudeau pay the herald to lie for him?

Thanks, now I know that the Calgary Herald is also a mouthpiece for our WEF socialist PM and his commy NDP sidekicks.

Even more than the federal policies have driven out in the last few years? Hard to believe.

Or it could bring investment, stability in Alberta WILL bring investment.

🤣😂 how much money did you get from the liberal government

Oh well crap better vote NDP then righhhhhht $$$$

This has already happened. The act atleast stands for albertans. Calgary Herald is a misinformation source!

Or it could radically increase investment. Many experts believe the bill would reassure investors that the far left socialist federal government would not be able to regulate them out of business.

It would be the 'Could Answer ' if the truth be told that also means it 'COULD' DRIVE INVESTMENT TO ALBERTA.

Like the 100 billion Notley drove out. Did the chamber utter a peep about that. If they didn’t they are a useless organization

Dodnt you hear that tr8deau did that when he froze bank accounts

The Herald drumming up drama for coins.

'Could', 'might', 'may'... no facts, no data, just pure speculation.

Calgary Herald is fake and gay

How many bailouts has the Herald taken from taxpayers?

What a crock. How’d it work for sask and Queerbec?

Nice lie and trash coming from the leftwing puppets at the harald.

Liars.

The Mayor of Calgary declaring a 'climate emergency' is more of a problem

Only leftist investment, it is a good thing. If you think I am incorrect about corporations having political bias then you've been missing all the leftist cancel culture. I think all freedom loving Canadian's and companies should move to Alberta to support the sovereignty act.

Not likely.

The smear campaigns from these media outlets is hilarious. Saskatchewan just passed essentially the same bill with the support of the NDP. Quit with your fear porn and do better, this is why people don't trust the media

ON THE CONTRARY!! Trudeau BLOCKS projects to develop Alberta's energy resources, and creates uncertainty for investors. (Remember TECK?) TRUDEAU has been the source of worry for investors. If Alberta can stand up against him, it will create stability & ATTRACT investment.

Surely more likely to attract investment….

Many companies support this. Tried of investing and starting projects, only to be shut down because of upstream and downstream gender neutral regulations.

Absolutely Not. It will be a beacon to set up shop away from the Woke Broke Liberal Ideology that is killing our Society.

Could? Or it could improve investing! Just think they investors would gain by having nothing tondo with Ontario or Justin Trudeau.

it could drive me away from Alberta too

Trudeaus media and liberal lackys are going full out to prevent Alberta from upholding our constitutional rights CdnMediaFailed abpoli ableg

Yes but it won't. Legacy media is so pozzed, always on the attack...

ya think?

Hahahahah... no. It will bring investment. Unlike Notley's disastrous Royalty Review which drove away investment like nothing else in Alberta history.

😂 only in a liberal/NDP mind. IStandWithDanielleSmith

The new UPC Sovereignty Act could very well bring Buisness to Alberta!!!

Media spreading fake news? What a surprise!

Much more good than bad in this proposed legislation.

Nobody scares off investment in Alberta more than a progressive Marxist liberal.

Wow way to spin a story and lie to the public on behalf of Justin Trudeau sell outs

Lies

It makes no sense that companies would care about a province using legislation to push back on federal overreach. It doesn't interfere with their ability to conduct business whatsoever. This is basically how the United States works.

You meant to say Trudeaus policies have driven investment away from Alberta

LIARS

The federal government killed Energy East and Northern Gateway by constantly changing the goalposts until investment went away. Now the sheep are bleating about Smith ( insert CBC here )

if these councils dont like it, it is obviously good for Albertans because these people have proved they dont work for Albertans

Leftwing rag. I wouldn't wipe my a$$ with it!

The only energy future Alberta has is hydrogen. The Liberals are building you blue hydrogen production and filling stations. The only exportable energy will be green hydrogen. Nobody in the world wants dirty hydrogen.

Anymore then the NDP drove it away in their short tenure ?

Kinda like electing NDP government would do the same thing 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh look MSM is once again promoting a one sided argument, how much financial gain did you get for this one, News is supposed to be neutral and unbiased. How about you stick to journalism instead of trying to drive an agenda.

I doubt it...if anything it would create stronger partnerships...Especially if we can drive pipelines down south again after Biden is fired.

Au contraire

I disagree with Yedlin. One would have hoped she might leave her Liberal politics out of this.

I doubt it would be close to the amount chased out of Alberta and Canada by the Federal government

The Liberals have expanded tax credits for O&G. They have invested $billions to continue to prop up AB. O&G production is at record levels. ...

Trash journalism

Or a mass influx of people and money.

MISINFORMATION

'Bill 1 would allow ministers to bring motions forward to the Alberta legislature to debate whether a federal initiative is unconstitutional or harmful to Alberta', I don't see the problem

Calgary drove investment away with no help from Premier Smith ahhahaha

Lol you sure did you do fact checking and actual research or are you spewing your 'Opinions' like always

Your ass backwards. The progressive policies are driving investors from AB. Irresponsible mandates are driving work from AB. Who writes your twitter headlines ? They lack in truth.

.. to Ontario, where it belongs

Stop the lies !! It already has brought it investment

This article has been found to contain gross misinformation, presumably funded by the Liberal Party. Go Danielle! Fight like hell!

Or could drive investments into Alberta

… Or… it ‘could’ sustain investor confidence by guarding from federal gov’t policy overlap and meddling in matters of provincial jurisdiction

Give me a break. She wouldn’t have unilaterally shut down schools and small businesses during Covid nor would she have arrested pastors. A more measured approach means a better outlook for all industry.

Or it “could” drive more to Alberta. Florida has been doing very well as a free state.

This is such disgusting hate inciting, fear mongering journalism garbage!

NOT 'could'... --WILL

Time to post her picture next to a head of lettuce and see what lasts longer ?

WRONG

🙄

The only reason investors are leaving Alberta is the anti-oil and gas rhetoric from our useless Liberal/NDP federal government. It’s time to limit their involvement.

NeverNotley

No business likes political chaos Albertans

Yeah like Twitter!🤣🤣

No it couldn't

Fear mongering over an act that might never be used.

When the liberal machine is shitting itself attacking this, you know it’s a good thing

Could have the reverse effect also !

Incredibly misleading headline DylanShort_ and as for Yedlin CalgaryChamber please be more thorough when reading the Act. The Act basically emphasizes the rights Alberta and actually each Province already has under the Constitution. This is an investment driver TO Alberta.

Nope. Not going to happen

Well, let’s try it out.. We had no problem shutting down the economy for TWO YEARS. I bet you they still do much better than during these unscientific forced closures lasting the better part of TWO YEARS

Yeah this could really hurt the thriving downtown core of Calgary 🤡

🤣🤣🤣🤣 they should be worried! All there woke little loser lefty rules are being torn apart! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

And it “could” be the best thing for Alberta investment . If you want to live in a world of hypotheticals

Drive liberal crap away, but bring in solid investments. It'd be beneficial to rid of Ottawa's toxic influence

The sovereignty act has already attracted increased investment.

Didn't you mean Notley and Trudeau scaring away most oil and gas investment in Alberta?

Liberal propaganda, most Alberta business is behind the scenes already. The pinko puppets are trying hard with their bigotry.

Highly unlikely. The Trudeau govt policies are what has driven investment away.

Apparently without the Act, investment dried up under the NDP. Too bad you people don’t hire journalists anymore. You push a false narrative and fear monger w/o checking your facts first.

This will just drive Justin away

Federal government and their hand puppet Notley are pretty worried about this. Wonder why?

20 'news' stations all reading the same script. Zero self awareness

Just another liberal rag.

I’m about to make a $5 million investment in Alberta in the next 2-3 months. It’s not something I would do if the NDP was back in. The Chamber should stay out of politics. I’m actually putting my money where my mouth is, they are all speaking in hypotheticals.

Yes. It will hurt AB. One gets to the point you have to realize you make your living on something that will be viable. The opposition that will probably win next spring’s election will not be good for AB either. People will move on.

Premier Smith's proposed sovereignty act could drive investment in Alberta

Do you have proof for that? I haven't heard of anything leaving.

Except the whole point of the bill is to stop Ottawa from destroying the Alberta economy in its puritanical woke agenda.

Any use of 'could' in a news analysis also implies its twin: 'could not.' In other words, this is journalistic masturbation.

So true, good people of Alberta need to get rid of her.

Vote for Danielle A vote for Rachel is a vote for Trudeau

Highly doubt it. You don't even understand what you are talking about.

She has the media scared

Where is there any evidence this could scare off investment? It will probably do the opposite as it make Alberta more prone to be able to be pro industry having positive effect for all Albertans.

Alberta has lost a 15 year contract to supply Germany with natural gas, due to Trudeau ..... yet, the leftards are up in arms about losing some soap opera garage made movie makers who need mandates in order to operate ......

We saw how Calgary municipal election went and they are not the intellectual and moral HighGround.

Or bring it in

They know very well the act will do no such thing. They just believe you are too lazy to read it for yourself, so they feel comfortable lying about it.

Very funny the exact opposite is going to happen. Don’t forget Daniel Smith is reaction by Albertans for our federal government chasing away $600 billion in investment and economic growth. You asked for this and we finally found our pitbull

what investments? Trudeau and his sidekicks have already done that

ya nope

NDP governments also create instability. Anyone going to address that?

It happened to Quebec's financial sector, they left and set up in Toronto.

Electing an NDP Government would be worse. You guys are so just upset that we won’t be Ottawas lapdogs anymore.

Actually it’s drawing more jobs to the province because we are fucking sick of this liberal over each, the blatant fear for lack of control over a province that’s done with this communist agenda is astounding.

The Herald still big mad about Danielle. Seethe harder, rag.

Or attract it.

Already has. Markets are forward looking discount mechanisms. As soon as she started talking about it, Alberta started hemorrhaging money.

A lot worse than a few scared of investors. Probably not the thing to focus on.

It happened in Quebec.

Trudeau and Notley already did that !

Oh look who is sounding an alarm the fear mongering leftist federal government funded mainstream media

I see you're part of the fake news too eh

🤣 🤣 🤣 Try again, . Imagine being a JustinTrudeau mouthpiece in Calgary.

DiedSuddenlydocumentary

BS. It would attract investment.

Really do you think?

Why would it scare investment, when it is there to protect investors from the Feds changing the game once the company already invests?

Business in Alberta has been trained by lefty-lib city gov'ts to be afraid of their own shadows. A business-friendly prov. government will very likely change that. Comparing greater Alberta independence from Ottawa's malign influence to the barmy Quebec experience is fatuous.

SA could stop AB from separating. It might save Canada.

NDP did that last time they were in power .

This same Chamber told us that lifting vax restrictions would drive away business.

Trudeau stomped all over the Alberta oil & gas industry, wants to bankrupt farmers with the carbon tax and restrictions on fertilizer use, has had useless & restrictive vaccine mandates, and has gone after legal gun owners. No one expected push back? Go Alberta Go Danielle Smith

It will do the opposite. It will attract investors.

Notley & Trudeau already drove investment away. The evidence, downtown Calgary vacancy rate approaching 40%. i.e. the fact Yedlin & Gondek continually ignore.

It won’t. If anything investors may hold off until the next election out of fear Notley will get elected. But no investor is fearful of a business friendly leader.

Could? The UCP have been driving investment away since being elected.

Liberal fearmongering.

I believe the opposite will happen. That chamber isn't the smartest group

The Liberal attack on Western Energy has decimated investment not only in Alberta but all of Canada. Every country on the planet would love our resources, not no, we shut them down. Bring back common sense.

No one has ever accused her of being smart...

Replace could with will and your headline is correct.

absurd

Key word is could based on “experts” like Notley

Or not

She’s the best

FakeNews

Yedlin is joke.

It could have the opposite effect.

When Calgary votes for a mayor who stops construction of a major arena for the scam of Global Warming, decrying Smith trying to keep Ottawa out of Alberta’s pocked, just rings hollow. Chamber has gone off the deep end like many institutions infiltrated by the left. Herald too.

Good. May the find out be swift and brutal.

Could, but won't!

Why?

As canada becomes more authoritarian under a Trudeau/Singh administration, Alberta will attract more and more investment and migration from other parts of Canada. The socialist will fight it but we sorely need Smith right now!

Liar liar Herald, I will invest in Alberta.

The media sure does suck. Just report the news. I don’t give a shit what your opinion.

this is why leaders need to be elected by citizens rather than just defaulted in

That's what the media fear mongers also said about free trade in the 1980's.

The chamber is a bunch of communists. Will they apologize when this doesn't happen? The reality is the Trudeau government has driven out 600 billion in investment. The chamber said nothing.

Calgary Herald lol... fish wrap newspaper

“Could”. And it could drive Trudeau’s policies away too. Or it could cause investments to increase. You are just another liberal bought account trying to spread fear again.

Yeah, I think that's the point.

The exact opposite will happen….

Fake news

She is a reflection of how selfish money and entitlement behaves. The oilsands belong to Canada....

Historically, a free society has attracted investment & prosperity - especially in regions rich in natural resources - but go ahead & gaslight it as you please.

Fearmongering?

Nice- if that investment comes to Ontario, it's awesome. What kind of investment, by the way?

That's a laugh. What's happened in the last 7 years when Alberta let Ottawa walk all over it. Maybe a page out of Quebecs book is the way to go.

It could also bolster investment

Misinformation 😃

Couldn't be anywhere near as close as the investments Alberta last when Notley was in office.

Smiths actions are already proven to attract business to Alberta... So long as they don't get NDP/LIBERAL RED TAPE , RESTRICTIONS, OR FINES. DANIEL SMITH WILL MAKE ALBERTA THE POWER HOUSE IT WAS....BEFORE NOTLEY. DANIEL SMITH 100%.

Could.. or could not. We shall see. But we know for a fact that Notley's previous govt wrecked province economy and AB lost many billions in investments in Energy sector. NDP already has an established disastrous track record, let's not forget about that.

Yeah lets hear financial wisdom from a bunch of people living on the federal tit. You people dont know which end of a cow produces what. Talking heads thats all you are.

Ah right, like the NDP and Liberals having been doing for 40 years. Anybody looking for office space in Calgary?

I wish these articles would start saying WILL drive business away. Not to mention people but whoops we don’t talk about them.

Lies

What do you mean 'could'? It will definitely drive investment away

Government regulation, extremist green agenda, and Rona reactionism has utterly dropkicked the hell out of us for years now.. on the whim and will of (primarily) Libs and NDP. Don't be stupid, investment has long been sketch in Canada. If anything, this provides stability

They are clearly taking a shot at secession. Their government mismanages the province year after year and then blames the rest of the Country. I'm no JT fan but his gov did save AB from Kenny's K-XL disaster. They got protections written in on the new NAFTA b/c Kenny was to Dumb.

But decimating oil and gas to promote your climate change hoax will be good for investment, right Calgary Herald?

The Canadian Constitution defines the areas provinces have control over. These include resources, healthcare, education, property rights. The AB sovereignty act ensures these rights will be protected. Quebec has asserted these rights repeatedly. It’s time all provinces do this.

It will bring investment.

The lord saith, stupidity doth not divine comfort and economic security make. Chaos is not a measure of wealth nor a means of production. Sloth is not a virtue, nor patience endless. Though excuses for the lack thereof, maybe. Can we not plant seeds and grow them in 2023? HEMP

firetheucp_

Trudeau already did that but I know you won't admit that.

Shitty take , The exact opposite will occur if you install market confidence , sorry to have to point that out to your taxpayer funded journalist .

It will attract investment

I'm done . I'm pulling out next month

100% - my office was about to sign on a new location in Alberta before this happened. We’re now going elsewhere. Alberta’s dead ☠️

The only instability in Alberta is the News Media undermining our democratically elected leaders and sabotaging our economy. They are on thin 🧊

BS stop with the media attack piece.

And this is why every MSM is struggling financially.

At least the chamber of commerce didn't just change their tune to suck up to Danielle like so many of the UCP leadership candidates and MLAs like Sonya Savage. Is Danielle going to phone them and threaten them now? Blackmail? She likes to do that.

Let me rewrite that: The sovereignty act could drive investment back into Alberta after the beating it has taken from Ottawa.

So does no pipe line support you fake news outlet

That's a fat lie

Or maybe everyone is thinking about moving to Alberta, myself included

Just stop your nonsense already. This is akin to you glorifying Ukraine when their Govt is made of Nazi battalions who have been shelling fellow Ukrainians since Feb 2014 MSM is PURE UNADULTERATED LIES

“Could”… worse than a weatherman…

Notley drove out 100 Billion 8 years ago . Along with Trudeau .& we’ve never recovered .

The SA “could” drive investment away, but you know what has proven to have driven investment away? An NDP government and federal spite legislation like Bill C48 and BillC69.

Investors were driven away years ago by NDP

doing there part in the liberal propaganda machine

Says who? The world wants Alberta oil.

“Yedlin argued the act does not allow for constructive conversations with the federal government” Because we all know the federal government has been great at listening to Alberta’s concerns.

Justin has already driven the investment away

Already is.

Calgary Chamber never spoke to or canvased their members before talking to the press. The feeling amongst is members is Calgary biz will be leaving the CalgaryChamber

one of her goals is to grow the alberta economy. If it’s bc PM’s office will act like a dictatorship + block any attempts for AB to control their own economy… well, that’s the very problem this bill seeks to solve. Ottawa has too much power contrary to CND constitution.

Who owns the Calgary Herald?

Ah the buzzwords the media is so good for in order to avoid accountability. 'Could'

exactly the opposite will happen. how misguided can you actually be to jump on the anti-danielle bandwagon. Well, we are taking names and when accountability shows up, we will see you on the list

🦄s *could* fly out of my a**.

More than what Trudeau and Notley have driven away. It’s selective BS

Deborah Yeldin of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce thought vaccine passports were a great idea. That’s all I need to know about her opinion.

Wow when you lose the Calgary Chamber you have likely lost Calgary… abpoli ableg

We have today removed all our Alberta based investments from our portfolio and I know of three others who are doing the same. This is like the blood diamonds disinvestment that we all did a while back.

More Bullshit from the Liberal funded Calgary Herald.

Haha. whatever. it will bring investment that Trudeau has scared off.

Yes. it could. just take Brexit as an example. A lot of businesses just hold back or walked away.

No shit Sherlock

Doubt that. Investment will actually come to Alberta when investors know the provincial government stands up to a federal government that wants to end energy development.

Fake news as usual. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

BS

This Bill 1 is so vague, perhaps deliberately so.

I call BS! JT already mastered this task...

It could, but would it? Nah. Alberta economy would be the engine to power Canada if the federal government would be made of even marginally competent and well intentioned people. Hopefully now it will do much better despite Trudeau's incompetence and malice.

Oooh, ooohh, do Saskatchewan next. 🙄

Not likely

Aren’t they a little…bias?

Fake news

davidakin Sovereignty would mean a new NAFTA agreement with America (which the GoP would likely gouge and massively take advantage of a weakened Alberta [and Canada]) as well as an agreement with Canada to ship goods through its ports. It would likely cripple the province.

davidakin They could, and if the rabbit wouldn’t have stopped to take a poop the bear might not have caught him. It could just as easily attract investment. Your article is disingenuous.

No shit. Once again the UCP makes us an international laughing stock, but this one’s through the roof. All Hail the Dark Queen Danielle! DanielleSmithIsUnfitToLead

Liberal liars be liars. When the goal is “ you will own nothing and be happy” then even if you were telling the truth then that would be in line with your goals. But it’s NOT true.

This is just another year of pound Ottawa for all of the problems created by Conservative/UCP governments inside the province. A decades old game that one would think Albertans would figure out.

I’m pretty sure the Federal government cancelling previously approved projects and proposed caps might be a bigger concern.

FAKE NEWZ

Meanwhile, moat ditch diggers and lawyers applaud the Premier’s decision.

Or it could even drive investors and investments to Alberta Guess you didn’t think about that now did you Always the negative, but then again your protecting your liberal pay checks

davidakin As compared to the investment being driven away by the federal Liberal govt?

Wrong

davidakin Albertans need to know what FAFO looks like when they elected the UCP. We are finding out in Ontario with Ford. How are they special?

JT drove investors away!

lol, sure.

Nothing but a bunch of misinformation. Go Premier Smith ❤

The goal is to drive Ottawa away. Why is it so bad to push for the same standing as Quebec in this Confederation? No one seems to want to answer that nor address the systemic discrimination of the west built into confederation….

Based on its newfound progressive ways the Chamber will be the one driving away investment.

It could also attract it but that story can’t be told, right?
