ThE Lagos State Government has urged owners of construction companies in the state to insure their workers and operations.

The Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr Lanre Mojola, gave this advice on Thursday during a one-day training themed, ‘Safety compliance at construction sites,’ in Alausa, Ikeja.

Mojola explained that the workshop was organised to enlighten company owners and artisans on the responsibilities of their employers to insure them and comply with safety policies. He said, “The training is devoted to the construction sector and we have picked artisans across the different associations, from electricians and bricklayers to welders, on how they can ensure safety on their sites and be informed about insurance schemes.‘’There are several types of insurance that will be appropriate, for them, there is employers’ liability insurance, insurance of public buildings and insurance of building under construction, depending on the type of contractor or the contract.

“The whole message is that they need to ensure that whatever job they take, they are insured, if anything happens and the risk has crystallised, they have what to fall back on.” In his presentation, the commission’s Director, Public of Safety and Well-being, Mr Adeyinka Adebiyi, noted that most of the accidents that occurred at construction sites were avoidable, stressing the need for workers to understand the operations of construction sites. All rights reserved.
