When Abena Foli had to bring a handmade gift to a white elephant exchange for her office Christmas party in 2015, she decided on a spice blend. The gift later evolved into her first company,, a line of progressively spicy blends for use in West African cooking — or any kind of cooking.
Foli later moved to the U.S. to study biochemistry and food science. In her college application essay, she outlined a goal of creating a food company that would process Ghanian food. After graduate school, she moved to New Orleans and experimented with a hot seafood sauce brand, but later shelved the dream when she realized it was too expensive.
Nothing like the 'next movement' comong off a continent of disentsry, diarrhea and malnourishment. 'Movement' indeed.
