Shops across the country are facing a particularly difficult six months ahead as customers try to cope with higher prices by buying less, according to the body representing UK retailers.
"The first half of the year is likely to be challenging for households and retailers," said Kris Hamer, director of insight, at the BRC. This Christmas was the first with no Covid restrictions since 2019, and shoppers did return to High Streets in bigger numbers. However, footfall remained below pre-pandemic levels, hampered in part by rail strikes and severe weather."From a retailer's point of view there's been a perfect storm of pressures," said retail analyst Richard Lim.
Many retailers face a reckoning in January, as they calculate whether Christmas takings have been strong enough to balance slower business through the rest of the year.
More choice online than the high street and no parking charge! No brainer
I think with the current pathetic state of postal delivery services shops may well see a come back

We are good at buying online for better consumer protection.
If we legalized cannabis we could open shops and cafes selling locally grown products, creating more retail jobs, and improving the challenging year the shops have ahead. If we don't take the leap first, other countries will do it, and we will end up with a smaller slice of pie.

Between the net, landlord high rents and lack of town investment, I think its safe to safe it's been that way for years already. Just means over the next year even more shops will close, more lose their jobs and more people being driven to online shopping. Never ending spiral.
