From a desire for more freedom to make mistakes to being able to connect with fellow creatives, here are the ways designers hope the industry continues to move forward this year.

The beginning of a year is always a time for people to look back and reflect on how they got to where they are. As we continue to emerge from—and grapple with—the effects of the pandemic, climate change, and increased calls for sustainability and inclusion in the industry, we thought we’d reach out to a large swath of designers representing the current diversity of our industry and ask them about their new year’s resolutions.

I would love to bring more focus on the collections and the stories being told through the garments, to concentrate on the meaning designers infuse in the work that so many passionate people were involved in making. I think fashion is first and foremost a process: a journey of trial, sharing, and mindfulness led by teamwork, more than just a final image. Sincerity and unity are the values that should guide creation, not the bottom line.
