A longtime Valley resident urges both sides to come together to pass an extension for Arizona's Proposition 400, the half-cent sales tax dedicated for transportation infrastructure funding, that is set to expire in 2025. phoenix

By Martin Shultz – Contributing writerI am so excited for Arizona’s future, and I hope you join me in that enthusiasm. Over the past decade, Arizona has been one of the fastest-growing states in the country and our booming economy has been recognized, multiple times, including being named No. 1 on economic performance, and No. 3 for economic outlook, this according to the Arizona Commerce Authority.

Here is what happened. In 1985, a 20 year half-cent sales tax, dedicated for transportation was overwhelmingly passed with 72% of the vote. I’m proud to say I was there. In 2004, it was renewed with the passage of Proposition 400. For some who don’t know, Prop 400 funded a balanced regional transportation plan that invests in freeways, highways, streets and transit. It has been in effect since Jan. 1, 2006. However, it will expire in January 2026.

As the readers of this column know, politics in Arizona has become very divided, and there is not one clear view on how we should move forward. I suggest our governor and legislators do something to serve all residents in our region, and all new Arizonans, by focusing on renewing this important source of funding, and do it immediately.
