Rocketing rents and utility prices mean that Ireland now has highest housing costs across the EU-27

Irish rents increased at the third fastest rate across the EU-27 in that period, behind only Estonia and Lithuania . By contrast, rents rose by just 16 per cent across the EU as a whole in the same period, and actually fell in two countries – Greece and Cyprus .In Germany, rent prices grew by 16 per cent between 2010 and 2021, and by 8 per cent in France.

In Ireland, price growth took off in 2013, from a much lower base than the EU average, given how far prices had fallen during the financial crisis. Overall, prices here grew by 38 per cent during the period. “Housing costs” as measured by Eurostat are largely driven by rents. However, the figure does also incorporate property maintenance costs, refuse collection and the cost of water, electricity, gas and other fuels.

While the cost of housing in Ireland is far above EU norms, the burden it places on residents is not as high as might be expected. 'Housing costs' as measured by Eurostat are largely driven by rents. Because the politicians are all in with cuckoo funds to make as much as possible.

Because most of our TDS are wealthy and landlords. LeoVaradkar Jackie_HealyRae

Has anyone every broken down the cost of builders hours, plumbers hours, painters hours, construction materials, vat, employers prsi, other state taxes and finally developers profit, now that would be an interesting piece of journalism, compare Ireland, Spain, Germany & Poland

Supply and demand. And an historic aversion to living in apartments. Dublin suburbs are a sprawling mess.

It's an Xmas cracker joke is it?

Mass immigration?

Jeez, is this a pi$$take from the Irish Times? Every day you are pushing property porn, inflating the attractiveness of shoeboxes and overpriced kips.

And disproportionately lower wages

But all is well in a perfect world in Ireland, we are just a landlord's income after all LeoVaradkar

It's called supply and demand. We keep importing the 3rd world but not building houses to meet the demand.

Migrants.

Disrespectful tenants and unfair media coverage

Because close to zero new houses were built between 2008 and what.. 2019? In the meantime demand for housing increased massively. The end.

How does leaky and co keep all those franchisers paid? BY CHARGING IRISH CITIZENS an arm and a leg for everything. Even the public transport and car parking are franchised out to French UK USA. Property bought up by outside franchises. Irish government can’t build hospital ffs.

And the main reason Ireland has less supply than most countries is because everything in the country is franchised out to China Russia USA etc actually everywhere. Ireland owns nothing and most of the citizens own less. Isn’t that right LeoVaradkar

It’s LACK OF COMPETITION! In other words a few own everything and can do as they wish and most own feck all. And the government like LeoVaradkar is encouraging the elite. If there’s a supermarket overcharging and Lidl for example want to move in to area, they are objected to.

'Have you stopped beating your wife?' Same question being asked here from an elite that stole from its own whilst the elected and those paid to protect looked the other way. Shame on Ireland and shame on the sheep that were happy to be distracted by a deceitful and cunning media.
