The semiconductor industry is called Taiwan’s “silicon shield”, giving the world a big reason to defend the island. Yet chips are also the industry most affected by the split between America and China

the chips that power everything from mobile phones to electric cars—and they make up 15% of Taiwan’sTaiwan produces over 60% of the world’s semiconductors and over 90% of the most advanced ones. Most are manufactured by a single company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation . Until now, the most advanced have been made only in Taiwan.

The semiconductor industry is called Taiwan’s “silicon shield”, giving the world a big reason to defend the island. Yet chips are the industry most affected by the split between America and China. Parts of the shield are now moving abroad. In Decemberheld a ceremony to mark the start of a chip plant in Arizona.

’s fabs, based on efficiency and high-skilled, long-hour labour, could make chips faster and more accurately than any rival. Experts agree that replicating this supply chain elsewhere would be inefficient. Mr Chang told reporters in November that the cost of making chips in America would be 55% higher. He reportedly told Nancy Pelosi that American efforts to bring the business home were “doomed to fail”.

Taiwan is pulled between the two. China has poured $50bn into chipmaking, hoping to meet 70% of domestic demand for chips by 2025. It has also poached Taiwan’s chip engineers, executives and trade secrets. That brain drain has alarmed Taiwan’s government, which has raided Chinese chipmakers and passed new laws against economic espionage. America is also trying to stop China getting advanced chips.

No, Taiwan is China.

The poaching probably affects Korea industry more now. The largest outflow of TW happened a decade ago. Now, they also try hard to convince Chinese engineers in US to return to China

poaching by china = hiring in international community

Taiwanese chip engineers & executives sound like they’ve voluntarily chosen mainland China over Taiwan….not sure it’s any of our business to frame this in a way that implies we can/should tell Taiwanese people what they can/can’t choose to (legally) do & where to work?🤷‍♀️

To be honest, it is impossible to have CN stayed put on chip industry. Of course, they will try hard to get into it.

沒有用的,邪惡CCP恐怖分子的野蠻本性很快就會暴露,工程師最終還是會慘死在共匪槍下。

Except for poaching engineers and executives, this describes a normal day of business for the unspecified location of origin of covid 19.

Does it make Taiwan safer?

If the US allowed chips to be sold to China, they would not have invested so much money and manpower in chip research. The US has forced China to conduct its own research and production.

Breaking news. Chinese poached Chinese engineers!

A cornerstone of 4th generation warfare is Economics.

Is it(Brain drain) new for US as well?

The U.S. administration forced TSMC to build factories in the U.S., and forced TSMC to hand over its chip manufacturing yield data and trade data in order to command TSMC to share part of its profit to the U.S. government. Why don’t you talk about this?

Wake up Tawaine

It’s the free market, stupid!!!

Communists shouldn’t have access to advanced technology.

Nice win

Follow the smart money:

Take it easy. Most of the funds has been taken by some ‘powerful’ people, if you have read the chip-related news in China. In a manner of speaking, that was a huge waste of money. What’s more, the 3-yr pandemic make those chip engineers and executives understand freedom matters!

Why doesnt a British company by TSMC so the technology can be shared between Taiwan and Britain to protect both our interest. So invading Taiwan wouldn't serve china's interest.🧠

Nobody stays on top forever.

Old news. At least a dozen Taiwanese led chip companies have bankrupted in China in the last five years. There used to be tens thousand Taiwanese semiconductor engineers relocated to China before pandemic. Now the trend has died out since new fabs are built in Arizona and Japan.

This is exactly what everyone should have known would happen. The sanctions turned chipmaking into a matter of national security and survival, so they will do whatever it takes. Then within 2 years they will undercut the market and dump at 1/2 price.

The pouring was expected. But,why do you say they poached Taiwan's chip engineers, executives and trade secrets when Taiwan is Chinese?

哈哈哈哈

對中華民國台灣地區普及邪惡CCP恐怖分子集團的反人類罪行認知很重要! 別讓金錢擾亂了正義價值觀的堅定!

What about us transferring the engineers and factories to Phoenix? Robbing brains and blood totally

US hires, China poaches. Manufacturing news 101

👏👏👏

Nevertheless TSMC must be defended from the communists. Afraid all we can do is arm the locals thereabouts to the teeth. Sad ...

At this point.......I don't think we should allow cutting edge tech in Taiwan. It isn't safe.

The same thing American did to Germany nazi scientist

A war for chips

They offered their engineers a better deal that's just business. What's with the dishonest framing? Is the US poaching programmers from India and China?

The US govt now purposely arrange for tsmc to be situated near intel, same intention for intel to poach tsmc’s engineers more conveniently. Steal the technology, steal the workers, then ignore Taiwan’s disbelief.

This story is superficial. I think the article should accurately reflect China's adherence to free market principles, which is commendable. Additionally, I believe that replacing the word 'China' with 'the USA' in the article would make it more sensible.

if china can find another set of processes to make new chips, that would be good for the world. The only condition is not to have a world war then

Being a mega oil consumer China last week secretly brokered a peace deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia wherein both countries resumed diplomatic ties and the US foreign policy experts seem to have been ignorant of the rapidly changing oil dynamics of the Middle Eastern region

America must catch up or be held hostage.

when the US does it, it's not poaching. When China does it, it's poaching.

Don't need poaching Taiwan engineers; they will run away from Taiwan themselves just like solider from Taiwan

Why all those years the West buying everything with the tag 'Made in China' and business moving production there ? A failure of globalisation or just poor business decisions ? davidmcw Aidan_Regan CWeston_Indo SJAMcBride

The 'brain drain' move is straight out of Washington's playbook.

DeptofFHed intel InvestNI

did the ccp write this article for you?

Like everything else. Why is everyone suddenly acting all surprised about the extent of China's IP theft ?

Semiconductor sector is not good situation as their sales are falling now. Most of companies must have bought much semiconductor and had enough inventory. We need to focus on sales of TSMC.

and the imminent take over of Taiwan by CCP

High value, small footprint, limited materials to transport. Good except remember the toxins in soil & water in Silicon Valley

So the US is more interested to protect the chips in Taiwan and not the Taiwanese people.

The main land will dominate in a couple of years and Taiwan will need China more than they need US, who ignores any country if it is not useful or if it cannot be used hurt their enemies.

Tsmc built a huge new warehouse in Arizona or somewhere

It looks like big enough reason for mistrust between them

Screw that! We need to make chips in the U.S. Now!

Nothing to do with America's concern about the welfare of the Taiwanese natives being overrun by Chinese colonialists then!

It is time to divert Taiwan’s trade and investment from ChinaTaiwan has long depended on America for defence and China for growth. That worked when the two superpowers broadly co-operated. But now China is using its economic clout to isolate the island is it a planned&controlled reason to fight, Who knows.. That means quit Chinese market? Ooh, yeah... Everything is possible but without losing HUGE PROFITS! WE NEED BETTER FAIRY TALES! How would that be possible? TAIWAN businesses depends on Chinese mainland and China doesn't need Taiwan so badly. Indeed is the policy to make them confront what is used to sell that narrative. China doesn't need a war at least it's provoked by third party.
